Artist Statement

Home is a place where you feel loved and safe. It can be a place, a person, or a feeling. To many home is their actual house, but to some it is not. Whether it is because of neglect, addiction, or any form of abuse, some people feel unsafe or unloved in their own house. Home to them is somewhere else. It can be a friend’s house or a relative’s house; or in some cases not a house at all. For some it can be school, the library, or a doctor’s office.

This photo portrays the idea that home is not always a house. In this case it is the extreme opposite, a car, that literally takes the subject away from their house. Each viewer can interpret a different reason for this subject not feeling safe at home. Some could relate it to their own lives, giving them a personal connection to the photo. The cliche saying “Home is where the heart is” is represented here. There is a red heart hanging from the rearview mirror that stands out against the dark ominous colors of the rest of the photo. This visually shows the viewer that home to this subject is their car.
