The word fascination always has a positive connotation that comes along with it. With my photo I thought more outside the box about the ways fascination can be negative. What first comes to mind when I hear fascination is the saying, “you always want what you can’t have.” I connected this saying to body image. Many people, mostly girls, hate the way they look. Something I overhear a lot and have even even done myself is wish I was someone else.

Everyone has their insecurities and that is natural. But when it comes to weight and figure it can be taken to an unhealthy and dangerous level. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating are just some of the dangers of an unhealthy body image. In high school it is very hard to be happy with the way you look, people judge you and make fun of you and this is what causes insecurity.

For my photo I focused on someone obsessed with losing weight. They are fascinated with the idea of losing weight and being skinny and have taken it to dangerous levels. I have a bulletin board to portray how this person’s life revolves around the idea of losing weight. On it there are pictures of skinny bodies, work-out plans, and “motivational” quotes. In the photo she is filling out a day on the chart used to map out what she eats each day. You can see how unhealthy this obsession is by what is written on the chart.

What is expressed through this work is the importance of accepting who you are. Insecurities are natural, but when taken to this extreme level it is dangerous to your health. It is important to understand everyone is different, and to learn to accept and love who you are rather than wish you were someone else.
