Today people feel incomplete without their phones. Everyone is more worried about posting what they are doing on instagram and snapchat than actually enjoying the activity and the people they are with. I see this happen with my friends and even my mom. She can’t even engage in a conversation with me when she’s on her phone because she is so intrigued with whatever is happening through social media.

Without having access to social media, people are forced to live in the moment. This is a good thing, it inspires a positive change in people as they realize how much they are missing out on. Technology distracts from the beauty of real life and real experiences. I have realized that without my phone I notice so much more.

With my photo I am portraying how people feel when their phone dies. I exaggerated the value people place in their phones by staging a funeral for a dead phone. Funerals are held for humans, you attend them for loved ones, maybe even pets. This shows how people feel their phones are part of them, or family.

After critiques I changed the setup of my photo by placing a flower on top of the phone in the casket and a pile of dirt next to the hole all to exaggerate this idea of a funeral. The dark lighting of the photo creates a somber mood, which helps to portray how the character is feeling after losing her phone.

The message that this photo expresses is that technology is valued far too highly by everyone. Instead we need to value experiences, people and relationships. We need to live in the moment rather than through our screens or else we will miss out on a lot.
